Nicaragua

Missionaries Ryan & Sarah Schmitz serves with Global Partners in Matagalpa, Nicaragua. They wrote recently with a ministry update…

Dear Milliken Church Family,

What a powerful experience it is to serve here at the Las Colinas Primary School in Matagalpa. Many girls in this city suffer under poverty, neglect, abuse, and violence. Many will not go to high school. They will drop out to work or because men will tempt them and they will struggle to raise babies. We are finding that our school is the only safe place many of our students have. Here they find encouragement, love and the presence of Jesus.

We walk beside the students and their families through difficult circumstances. We want them to hear the Gospel, eat healthy meals, be inspired to read, and learn skills that can improve their economic situation in a sustainable way. They can be the future leaders of this community and in the churches. It is vitally important to invest in them daily through the school.

Currently, water is only available in our school when it is delivered by a truck. Sadly, this water is not purified but is often contaminated. This leads to problems with sickness, including parasites and hepatitis. We are praying for a well to be dug on our property soon. Having a reliable water source will help the school to use its washrooms more effectively and improve our hygiene and nutrition. It may even become a help to the local community.

Thank you for your prayers on behalf of this ministry. April was an intense, dry month of heat, but the rains of May are quickly to arrive. Many blessings to you all, from the land of lakes and volcanoes!

-Ryan, Sarah, Micah, Eva, Abel & Esme Schmitz
